Those Dirty “YouTube-ers”

Fox is steaming mad about the premiere episodes that were leaked onto YouTube before the premiere started.
According to this article, sent in by faithful reader the other aaron, Fox has subpoenaed YouTube for the identity of the user that uploaded the videos.
There was a brief mention of the episodes being leaked to P2P filesharing, but there was no mention of legal action being taken towards those sites, or downloaders. It’s probably easier to catch someone from YouTube rather than someone from a Torrent site.

What’s new and interesting about this is that Fox is going after individual who uploaded the video, rather than YouTube themselves. In the past people have taking shots at YouTube for hosting copyrighted material. Now they’re going after the individual (a la the RIAA lawsuits for illegal filesharing that they’ve levied against grandma). Basically, telling YouTube (owned by Google, mind you) that they have to turn over the name of the person that they’re going to sue. Tricky thing for YouTube. They’re accustomed to being the target of these suits, and now they’re just being told (by a federal judge) to hand over a name for imminent prosecution. It’ll be interesting to see how this all turns out.

What’s the big deal. honestly i really don’t see it hurting the ratings at all. I actually watched the premier the weekend before it showed on fox, but then watched it again on monday. honestly i don’t think they’ll get anywhere with all these law suits and what may have you.
